India is the second largest producer of silk in the world. India has witnessed a compound annual growth rate of 4.59% in production of Mulberry silk from 16360 metric tonne during 2010-11 to 20478 metric tonne during 2015-16. We have seen a decline of -4.26% in production of Mulberry silk in India during 2015-16 over the year 2014-15. There was a growth of 9.83% in production of Mulberry silk in India from 19476 metric tonne during 2013-14 to 21390 metric tonne during 2014-15. The top 5 States/UTs in terms of production of Mulberry silk during 2015-16 were: Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra.
Production of Mulberry silk in Karnataka was 9823 metric tonne during 2015-16. It accounted 47.97% of the total Mulberry silk produced in India during the year. Production of Mulberry silk in Andhra Pradesh was 5086 metric tonne during 2015-16. It accounted 24.84% of the total Mulberry silk produced in India during the year. Production of Mulberry silk in West Bengal was 2351 metric tonne during 2015-16. It accounted 11.48% of the total Mulberry silk produced in India during the year.
Production of Mulberry silk in Tamil Nadu was 1898 metric tonne during 2015-16. It accounted 9.27% of the total Mulberry silk produced in India during the year. Production of Mulberry silk in Maharashtra was 252 metric tonne during 2015-16. It accounted 1.23% of the total Mulberry silk produced in India during the year.
The above mentioned top 5 states accounted for 94.78% of the total Mulberry silk produced in India as a whole during 2015-16.
