Why govt is asking to not laminate or plastic-print your Aadhaar cards

The Aadhaar issuing authority has cautioned the public against using laminated Aadhaar smart cards. Using the plastic or laminated Aadhaar smart card could render the QR code dysfunctional or even expose your personal data.

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has published a cautionary alert to Aadhaar users. There is a rise of agents and vendors that are offering an unauthorized version of Aadhaar smart cards for as low as Rs 50. According to UIDAI, these PVC Aadhaar smart cards are often unusable.

UIDAI offers Aadhaar letter and its cutaway portion to each citizen. The downloaded version of Aadhaar printed on an ordinary paper is perfectly valid too. UIDAI also offers a valid mAadhaar on the smartphones.

A PVC printed version of Aadhaar smart card is being sold by local vendors for anywhere between Rs 50-300, the payment which is unnecessary in the first place. In most cases, this unauthorized printing damages the QR (quick response) code. UIDAI’s CEO Ajay Bhushan Pandey said that this plastic Aadhaar smart card is unnecessary and waste.

The official statement by UIDAI reads, “The plastic or PVC Aadhaar smart cards are often not usable as the QR code (Quick Response Code) commonly becomes dysfunctional during such unauthorized printing at some vendor/shop. There is no concept such as smart or plastic Aadhaar card.”

Pandey also cautioned the individuals from sharing their Aadhaar number or personal details to these vendors for getting plastic printed cards. The government is sending notices to these unauthorized agents for not connecting Aadhaar information from the public for printing of Aadhaar cards. The notice clearly states that collecting such information or unauthorized printing of Aadhaar card is a criminal offense publishable with imprisonment under Aadhaar Act.
