Here's how Reliance plans to introduce 5G network in India

While Reliance Jio continues to make significant progress with its 4G subscriber-base, the company has already made provisions to expand Jio’s 5G and IoT capabilities. Reliance Jio has decided to acquire Radisys, the US-based telco solutions company.

The company will acquire Hillsboro, Oregon-based Radisys to help Reliance with 5G and IoT technologies. Reliance plans to acquire the US-based firm at $1.72 per share under their definitive agreement. The deal is yet to be approved by Radisys shareholders and the telecom regulatory of India.

Akash Ambani, director of Reliance Jio said, “Radisys' top-class management and engineering team offer Reliance rapid innovation and solution development expertise globally, which complements our work towards software-centric disaggregated networks and platforms, enhancing the value to customers across consumer and enterprise segments. This acquisition further accelerates Jio's global innovation and technology leadership in the areas of 5G, IoT, and open-source architecture adoption.”

The US-based entity has 600 employees in Bengaluru including its engineering team. Radysis will continue to work independently even after the acquisition. On the other hand, Reliance Jio is working towards launching the 5G network in near future. The company posted full-year revenue of 23.916 crore rupees ($3.6 billion) in April. The firm plans to provide 4G coverage to over 99% of the population by end of this year.

Jio’s net profit for the quarter rose to Rs 510 crore, this is a great improvement from last quarter’s Rs 504 crore. Reliance Jio is the only pan-India network that offers 4G across 800MHz, 1800MHz, and 2300MHz spectrum bands. The company offers 100% network availability with an average download speed of 17.9 Mbps.

In an official statement, Reliance Jio said, “Jio has built a next-generation all-IP data network with latest 4G LTE technology. It is the only network built as a mobile video network and providing voice-over-LTE technology. It has built a future-ready network which can easily deploy 5G and beyond technology in the last leg.”

India’s fastest-growing telecom operator and 186.6 million subscribers as of March 31st. The company officially added 83 million new subscribers in the year of 2017-18.
